Frequently Asked Questions About Alpacas

Q: Do alpacas spit?   A: Alpacas occasionally spit at each other as a result of a food dispute. They very rarely spit at humans.

Q: Can alpacas be kept with horses? (goats? other livestock?)   A: Alpacas are smaller than horses and cattle and are suseptible to injury. One swift kick from a horse and an alpaca's bones can easily be broken. Probably the easiest answer to this is: why risk it?

Q: What factors influence fleece quality?   A: Genetics, care, and diet.

Q: Is an alpaca more valuable if it has a bunch of blue ribbons?   A: No. What's valuable is an alpaca's conformation, health, and it's fleece quantity and quality. Keep in mind that show judging is subjective. There are, of course, many quality alpacas that have won ribbons, but there are also many quality alpacas who have never stepped foot inside a show ring. A logical approach to assessing alpacas is to become accustomed to evaluating their health, conformation and fleece quality.
